About Diwali
Diwali (as it is referred to in North India), or Deepavali (as it is
referred to in South India), is the Indian "Festival of Lights."
This major Indian festival that is very significant in Hinduism, Sikhism
and Jainism. The celebration embraces good triumphing over evil where
during the celebration lamps are lit to symbolize hope for humankind.
The lights and lamps are referred to as dipa or deeya, which means "earthen
lamp" and are often accompanied by the lighting of fireworks.
During Diwali the entire country appears illuminated on Diwali as everyone,
rich and poor alike, light up diyas and candles all around their homes.
People exchange Diwali greetings with all of their friends and family.
Gifts such as sweets and dry fruits are also exchanged to express good
wishes.
